Authors of Sneads Ferry Book to Speak at 'Coffee With the Authors' Event Nov. 3

Sherry W. Thurston and son Joshua W. Thurston have written a book about the quaint fishing and farming community of Sneads Ferry, N.C. The writers will be featured at an upcoming Coffee With the Authors event at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. on Nov. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m.

A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Sherry Thurston has owned Thurston Art Gallery in Sneads Ferry for over 30 years. She designed the famous Sneads Ferry Sneakers as her logo. When she first arrived in Sneads Ferry, she immediately felt at home. “I never wanted to leave,” Thurston says. “People here have given me a haven to create my art and feel part of the community.”

Over the years, Sherry met many of the townspeople, gaining knowledge of how the community was able to survive the Depression, World War II and many natural disasters. She learned how many families from England and Scotland and other points in Europe found passage and refuge in this area. Thurston photographed many local events, recording people and places in the hopes of painting her beloved adopted town.

The depth of her work convinced the artist and her son that the recorded information and images should be presented in a colloquial, yet historical manner and the idea for the book was born.

There is no fee for the authors’ presentation, but space is limited so reservations are required. Call the gallery at 910-575-5999. Sunset River Marketplace is located at 10283 Beach Dr. SW in Calabash, N.C. For more information, visit the website: or follow the gallery on Facebook.
