Sunset River Features DeGroot and Pope at Next 'Coffee With the Authors'
03/22/11

Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. will present the fourth event of its 2011 Coffee With the Authors series on Thursday, April 7 from 10 – 11 a.m. with Jacqueline “Jack” DeGroot and Miller Pope, authors of “Sunset Beach: A History.” Their presentation will include the anecdotes and “locals only” stories from long time residents of the popular coastal N. C. beach community. A portion of the interviews were conducted by DeGroot, while others were done previously by local historian Paul Edward “Ed” Hughes, who passed away in 2005. Together the stories paint a picture of life in Sunset Beach over the years.

Long-timers like Sam Somersett remember Hurricane Hazel back in the fifties. Tommy Tucker, son of former Sunset Beach Mayor Shelton Tucker, recalls several infamous events from years back. Ronnie Holden, who owns Twin Lakes Seafood Restaurant by the Sunset Beach Bridge, remembers renting his original building from Mannon Gore for $50 a month. Ginny Lassiter, owner of Sunset River Marketplace, also has a place in the chronicle.

This is the second collaboration between author/illustrator Miller Pope and novelist Jack DeGroot. Images by local nature photographer Ken Buckner are featured throughout the book along with Pope’s own photos and illustrations. The book is available in a hard cover coffee table.

The event at Sunset River Marketplace is free, but space is limited so reservations are required. Call 910-575-5999 or send an email to lassiter@sunsetrivermarketplace.com. Join the mailing list for notice of future events at the same number and email address.
