Sunset River Adds New Portrait Painter To Artist Roster

Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. is now representing and commissioning portraits by Joseph Gregor. Born in Slovakia, Gregor began his career in the early sixties working as a technical artist, but always interested in the fine arts.

After immigrating to Germany in 1968, he made new contacts and surrounded himself with other artists. “We inspired each other to push the envelope of our creativity,” he explains. His newfound friends encouraged him to explore and he began painting with oil, developing an affinity for abstracts. Throughout the seventies and eighties, Gregor participated in exhibitions all over Europe, including at the Society of Independent Artists Exposition in Paris, France.

After moving to Cherry Hill, N.J. in 1975, the artist enjoyed a long and creative career in technical illustration and graphic designed. He worked for a number of large corporations including Siemens, Scott Paper and DuPont, but he never stopped painting, saying that art relieved the stress of the corporate world.

It was during this time that he discovered his talent for portraiture. Recently he began working with pastels, and is enjoying the freedom and the moments of creativity that they capture so vividly.

Joseph Gregor accepts commissions to create portraits of people, cats and dogs that are based on photographic reference. Sample portraits are on display at the gallery along with a portfolio of the artist’s work.

Since opening in 2002, Sunset River Marketplace has become an active supporter of performing, literary and visual arts in the area. The 10,000 square-foot gallery features work by over 200 North and South Carolina artists. The newly expanded on-site pottery studio has two kilns and three wheels for use by students.
