Artists Fill Calabash Art Gallery With Pieces for Holiday Gift Giving |

Once there is a noticeable shift in the weather, when the air is crisp again and nights have turned cool, both the mood and displays at Sunset River Marketplace become even more festive. Lee Spivey, a popular jewelry designer from Wilmington, N.C. has added several of her signature sterling pendants to her display case. Potter Shandi Berls has been working madly on a series of small vases, pendants and earrings ideal for stockings, multiple gifts and hostess offerings. Baby cake bowls by Jeffcoat Pottery include recipes for carrot cake, yummy chocolate cake and more. Pop one in the microwave and then bring it to the party as a unique gift for your hostess. Hand blown art glass by Scott Summerfield is always in demand. Current pieces at the gallery include Christmas ornaments, candlesticks, paperweights, several different vase designs, cherry and pear sculptures and others. Sunset River Marketplace is home to works of art by more than 200 artists – all from North and South Carolina. You’ll see virtually every style and genre of art represented in the 10,000 square foot space. The friendly staff encourages visitors to take their time and enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and mulled cider as they meander through the gallery searching for the perfect piece. If a decision proves too difficult, a gift certificate – which may be redeemed for art, framing or instruction – is often a welcome solution. Lassiter adds, “We also have a section of books by local authors, which make great gifts. There’s a brand new history of Sunset Beach by Jack DeGroot and Miller Pope; we have Ann Ipock’s very funny books; the Harley books for children, which are written by Claire Connelly; and others, too. We have some very talented writers in the area.” Since opening its doors in 2002, Sunset River Marketplace has become a community hub for local art lovers as well as a destination spot for visitors. The gallery has been a big supporter of nonprofits such as Brunswick Arts Council, Hope Harbor and Brunswick Family Assistance. On April 9, 2011, the Sunset River Marketplace will host Tapestry, Tapas & Tobin, a fundraiser for the new Brunswick County hospice facility, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2012.
