Mystery Writer Tom Rieber to Speak at Gallery On Thursday, Nov. 1

On Thursday, Nov. 1, N.C. mystery writer Tom Rieber will speak at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. at the gallery’s final Coffee With the Authors event of the year. He will talk about his second book in the Nick Thomas mystery series, “Devil’s Parody,” which follows “Nine Irony.” In the popular novel, six gamblers lured by a $5 million prize are trapped by their own greed and find themselves playing for their lives.

The Nick Thomas character is a struggling, but contented mystery writer whose noble intentions and errant judgment often lead him into precarious situations that take resource and imagination to survive. Nick is a Viet Nam veteran, recovering alcoholic, and self-proclaimed philosopher of life who lives and works in an old cottage on the beach. He wears blue jeans, drives a temperamental old MG and listens to the Rolling Stones. He is a man who has been given a second chance in life with a great woman by his side, good friends who are there when needed, and he's doing what he loves to do. Sounds perfect, right? But, as always, life laughs while we make our contented way.

About himself, Rieber says, “I am a fiction writer and love the thrill when I get my teeth into a new story. I love fiction because you can be anything you want – a jewel thief, a fighter pilot, a murderer or even the President. I am a student of life. I love people and interacting with all types of social circles.”

The author, who now resides in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., grew up in East Hampton, Conn. and graduated with a journalism degree from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass. He started work on the Nick Thomas mystery series in 1991.

Rieber’s presentation begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 11 a.m. Gourmet coffee, tea and breakfast treats will be served. The Coffee With the Author series at Sunset River Marketplace is free, but due to limited space, reservations are required.
