On April 17 at 10 a.m., Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, N.C. will host Winston-Salem author Martha R. Brown as part of the art gallery’s Coffee With the Authors series. Brown will be discussing her historical novel “Holding Sweet Communion: Civil War Letters,” which is based on letters she accidently discovered by her great grandfather, who left home to join the Confederate Army.

S.C. musicians Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson will present a morning program on Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the gallery. The two are award winning beach music singer/songwriters. For 2013 alone, they have received 13 nominations for Carolina Beach Music Awards (CBMA), including Female Vocalist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and two for Song of the Year (“I’m Hungover” for Strickland and Hudson and “Every Now and Then” for Strickland).

Once-In-a-Decade Half Price Sale

In a first for the gallery, we're having a monumental 50%-Off Sale! It began as a way to clear some space, but has turned into a major collector's event. Artists such as oil painter Ann McCray, metal artist Anne Cunningham and oil painter Elaine Bigelow heard about the sale and wanted to add some of their own pieces. This is a spectacular for collectors to purchase top quality art at hugely discounted prices. As of this post, works by at least 27 different artists are included in the sale. Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. will present an exhibition of works by Reid Stowe, the artist/mariner whose 1,000 Days At Sea odyssey garnered attention and grabbed the hearts of the sailing community, media and armchair sailors all over the globe. The exhibition, Flight Into Abstraction, runs from July 1 to 31 and features approximately 20 paintings in mixed media. An opening reception is scheduled on Saturday, July 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. The public is invited and there is no charge. In conjunction with the exhibition, Stowe will give a presentation titled Reflections of an Artist at Sea at the gallery on Wednesday, July 10 from 2 to 3 p.m. This is part of the gallery’s ongoing Creative Exchange series.  Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, N.C. has announced its schedule of summer art classes for children. This year there are two instruction series.

Children’s Summer Fun, a seven-week series of individual classes with instructor Teresa Reiter, is set for Wednesday mornings from ten o’clock until 12 noon beginning June 19 and running through August 7. Each class features a different activity. Children may attend a single class or the entire series. Cost is $15 per child per class. The age range is six to 12 years old.

New this year, Children’s Pottery, a four-week series on Monday mornings for children aged eight through 12 years old, is being taught by Jamie Futera. The class runs from June 17 through July 8. The cost is $100 for the four-week session and includes clay. Students will learn the basics of pottery such as working with clay, using the kiln and firing the pottery, all in a manner appropriate for young children.

Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, N.C. will present Ruth Cox: Works In Oil from January 7 through February 16. The exhibition will feature 30-plus paintings by the prolific Myrtle Beach, S.C. artist. According to gallery owner Ginny Lassiter, paintings will include landscapes, coastal scenes, florals and other still lifes. Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, N.C. is hosting Brunswick Arts Council’s 2012 Fall Show & Sale, which was judged yesterday, Sunday, Oct. 7 and opened to the public today, Oct. 8. Over 200 works of art are included in the non-juried exhibition, including oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, collage and mixed media pieces, photography, plus three dimensional pieces in clay, wood and glass. There will be a reception and awards ceremony at Sunset River Marketplace on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m. The show runs through Saturday, Oct. 13 and is open to the public during regular gallery hours.

Myrtle Beach Days – a Visual & Literary Celebration of the Grand Strand opens at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. on Sept. 1 and runs through Oct. 3. It will include photography by famed Myrtle Beach historian Jack Thompson and paintings by Gwen Dumas (oil), Steve Jameson (acrylic), and Babs Ludwick (watercolor). Several books about the area will also be included in the display, including “Memories of Myrtle Beach” by Jack Thompson, “Fat Harold: Legendary King of Shag” by Howie Thompson, and “The Ocean Forest” and “Damn Yankee” by Troy D. Nooe.

There will be a reception and book signing on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. The artists and authors will be on hand to meet the public and answer questions about their work and experiences. The event is free. No reservations are required.... read more
